Product Testing
Halotron BrX continues to be tested to various fire test standards. These include Underwriters Laboratories (UL),
European Norm (EN), and International Standards Organization (ISO) Test Standards. Tests against the UL711
standard include those for UL Class A, B, and C. Class A fires include fires involving common combustibles
including wood. Class B fire test protocols require the repeated extinguishment of heptane fuel-in-depth pan fires
with a portable fire extinguisher under controlled conditions. Class C test protocols ensure that if the agent is
sprayed onto an energized electrical source that no electricity will flow back to the fire extinguisher
operator. Halotron BrX easily passed the Class C test as the agent is non-conductive. Most of the qualification
testing to date has occurred at UL facilities in Northbrook, Illinois, USA.
UL listed and EN approved extinguishers are commercially available.
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
In 2016, ASTM established two Standards for Halotron BrX (2-bromo-3,3,3-trifluoro-1-propene). ASTM D8060 is the
quality Standard Specification for Halotron BrX. ASTM D8061 is the accompanying Standard Practice for Handling,
Transportation, and Storage of the material. Copies of these copyrighted standards can be obtained at
www.astm.org and other authorized distributors of ASTM.
UL Component Recognition
In early 2017, Halotron BrX received UL component recognition as a clean agent intended for use in the factory
charging of fire extinguishers and extinguishing system units. UL follow-up service validates the consistency
and quality of the extinguishing agent, and having this recognition aids new hardware OEMs in obtaining faster
approvals of UL listed hardware.
